Why Constellate
Introduction to Family Constellations
What Are Family Constellations?
Family Constellations is a systemic therapy that focuses on resolving dysfunctional family patterns passed down through generations. By bringing unconscious family issues to the surface, individuals can gain insight into how ancestral influences may affect their present lives. The method aims to restore balance within the family system, leading to personal and relational healing.
How Do Family Constellations Work?
At the heart of Family Constellations is the idea that family members, even across generations, are interconnected. The method involves participants setting up a “constellation” or representation of their family, often using other participants or objects to represent different family members. This process brings hidden relationships and unresolved issues to light.

The Origins of Family Constellations
The method was developed by Bert Hellinger, a German psychotherapist, in the 1990s. Hellinger’s work with families in post-war Germany revealed patterns of trauma and unresolved grief that affected subsequent generations. He discovered that by addressing these deep-seated family dynamics, individuals could experience profound healing.
Revealing Hidden Dynamics
One of the key aspects of Family Constellations is the revelation of hidden dynamics within the family. These could be patterns of exclusion, unexpressed emotions, or unresolved trauma that affect the family members without their conscious awareness.
